Desired Enhancements and improvements

  • Underground electrical and communication services. Although, not a requirement, under-grounding the utilities would add considerably to the overall aesthetics of Rainier.
  • Walk street along riverfront between Marina and Post Office. This could really turn Rainier into a destination city. Charming shops and boutiques with a variety of eating establishments on one side and a wide walking/strolling path adorned with plants and trees. All with a clear view of the river and marina. A truly nice place to visit, relax, shop or just hang out.
  • Planters, trees, observation decks, trails connecting Fox Creek trail and Community Park. Let's connect all the various parks and trails making them all attractive to joggers, walkers and nature lovers. Informational plaques describing types of fish and animals that inhabit the area, flags of commercial shipping and ship identification, maps of landmarks such as distant mountains, and local history. Free permanently mounted telescopes.
  • Add fitness stations and mile markers along pathways.
  • Bicycle racks in downtown and along walking paths.
  • Add more trees to the park.
  • Add more covered areas in the park for picnics and small gatherings.
  • Improve spectator seating in the ball park.
  • Permanent stage in the park.
  • A walking/fishing pier with covered gazebo at the end.
  • Enlarged and improved marina with permanent and transient slips with free WIFI.
  • A fuel dock for pleasure craft with a small convenience store for food, beverages, bait, tackle, etc.
  • Free WIFI in the downtown area.
  • Relocate non-tourist type businesses just outside of revitalization district. Move the Hardware store and appliance store just out side of the primary A street "plaza" making them convenient to locals and businesses yet allowing for restaurants and boutiques in the main pedestrian areas. This would be ideal for a local Farmer's Market.
  • Add pedestrian passageway between Hwy 30 and A street. A nice wide, stepped pedestrian access connecting Hwy 30 and A street would provide more parking and easy, safe access for pedestrians.
  • A train for children to play on. Let's put a train with a engine and a caboose for children to admire and play on.
  • Maybe some rail cars to house the Chamber of Commerce or shops. Locate between the Pastime Tavern and the Eagles. Call it the "Depot Shopping Plaza". Plants, grasses, benches could be incorporated in the area. Nice place for meetings for locals and visitors.
  • Better beach access for pedestrians and park users. Enhance the retaining wall with steps to beach.
  • Bed and breakfast, hotels, river front condos. Add short term and long term housing along A street to help increase the tax base and bring more cash flow through local businesses.
  • Renovate City Hall and make it a featured landmark. Perhaps "Big Green" and the Masonic Lodge could all be renovate and serve as iconic, attractive historic district to the city.
  • Have a local model railroad club build a working model of Rainier.
  • Establish an annual "Tribute to Trains". Merchants can offer specials. The City could sell Engineer hats, shirts, whistles, pens, etc. Perhaps all coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Approach local garden clubs to contribute plants and trees.
  • Involve the schools to come up with themes, logos, designs, flags, and events.
